Who is your sporting hero?

John Barnes. When I started watching Liverpool, he was the most exciting player and I used to love his skill and how calm he was. When I met him as a kid, it was one of the best days of my life.

What would you be if you weren't a sportsman?

I was always determined to make it as a footballer but, if things hadn’t worked out, I’d have maybe followed my dad into the building industry.

Career highlight?

I’ve been lucky to enjoy a few but beating AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final comes top . I was only 24 and to be captain was an unbelievable honour. To be in the Cup Treble-winning squad in 2001 was special.

... and the worst moment?

I’ve had a few of those, too, but losing the 2007 Champions League final in Athens against AC Milan. We never played well. Scoring an own goal in the 2005 League Cup final against Chelsea was another low.

If your house was burning down, what one possession would you save?

I would make sure my wife, Alex, and two daughters, Lilly-Ella and Lexie, were safe. Then I’d get all my Liverpool and England shirts and those of players I’ve collected.

Best advice you've been given?

You will get out of football exactly what you put into it. That came from my dad.

Favourite karaoke song?

I’ve got a few Oasis and Beatles songs but I’d go for Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. I got a standing ovation when I did that at a 30th birthday party recently.

The most-listened to songs on your i-pod?

Dark Days Are Over, Florence and The Machine; Use Somebody, Kings Of Leon; Take Me Home, Phil Collins.

Last film you saw?

Due Date. I loved The Hangover and, as Due Date was produced by the same people, I thought I’d give it a watch. I’m glad I did because it was really funny.

Last book you read?

I don’t usually have much time for books but I did finish Neil Warnock’s autobiography. It was pretty good.

Favourite pre-match meal?

Grilled salmon and brown pasta works for me every time.

Can you cook? Best dish?

I’m lucky I don’t have to because Alex is superb. She has taught me how to make goats cheese pasta with pine nuts and peppers, so that’s my signature dish. It means I get by for one night on my own.

Your favourite holiday destination?

Portugal, as I love the golf courses there, and Dubai. The people there are fantastic and you are guaranteed good weather.

In a film of your life, who would YOU like to play you?

Daniel Craig. I know he’s a Liverpool fan and he’s my favourite actor.

I’m playing second fiddle to Justin Bieber — Bieber Fever is sweeping our house and my girls have made it clear I’m no longer their favourite man.
