Information for supporters travelling to Romania
Please find below important information on arrangements for our UEFA Europa League Group K fixture against FC Steaua Bucuresti in Bucharest. Supporters travelling to Romania are advised to take due note of this information as we believe that it will assist you during your visit.
Back in February 2010 Liverpool played AFC Unirea Urziceni at the Steaua Stadium as they do not have approval from UEFA to host European fixtures at their own stadium. We have been allocated the same seating area as for the game against Unirea on 25th February 2010.
The stadium is owned by the Ministry of Defence and was built by the Romanian Army. It is an all seated stadium with a capacity of 28,139 but the infrastructure and facilities are very poor compared to stadiums in the UK and some other European countries.
Tickets for the Visitors Sector are allocated in an area of the stadium WHICH IS UNCOVERED. THEREFORE SUPPORTERS WILL BE AT THE MERCY OF THE ELEMENTS AND YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT TEMPERATURES ARE LIKELY TO BE VERY COLD ON THE EVENING OF THE GAME.
THE VISITORS SECTOR COVERS FOUR ADJACENT BLOCKS NUMBERS 35, 36, 37 AND 38 AND WHILST SURRONDED BY TWO (2) METRE HIGH METAL FENCING AND POLYFLEX GLASS TO THE SIDES THE VIEW OF THE PLAYING ARENA IS REASONABLE.
Supporters in possession of tickets for these sectors should enter the stadium via one of four electronic full height turnstiles at Entrance G & H - TURNSTILE NUMBERS G1, G2, H1 and H2.
Supporters will before entering the stadium be subjected to a body search by Security Staff employed by the host club and then a ticket check.
Once passing through your turnstile, access to the seating area is via a dimly lit steep concrete staircase which does not have any handrails for support / guidance - SUPPORTERS ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN ENTERING AND LEAVING THE VISITORS SECTOR.
The home club agreed to the request made by Liverpool Football Club for directional / information signs to be erected on fencing outside the stadium and the visitors sector clearly defining the location of the visitors sector.
Whilst our visit to the Steaua Stadium in February earlier this year passed without incident it is recommended that supporters arrive early at the stadium to allow plenty of time for everyone to access the visitors sector in good time for kick-off. We wish to advise everyone to be patient when entering the stadium as we are aware of incidents that occurred before the UEFA Champions League fixture at this stadium in November 2009 when Rangers played Unirea, which involved Security Officers on duty. As in February Liverpool Football Club has requested that for this fixture the Security Officers employed by FC Steaua should not come across as confrontational and should dispense with the long batons, CS Gas, riot shields and dogs that we are aware to be the norm for domestic home games at this venue.
With the Visitors Sector (and much of the stadium) being open to the elements the area is very "weather worn", with the concrete steps being extremely hazardous and many of the seats being loose and twisted in the concrete terrace being urgently in need of maintenance. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN AT ALL TIMES WHILST INSIDE THE STADIUM.
DISABLED SUPPORTERS whose tickets will be allocated / distributed at the stadium on the night of the game should go to the Players' Entrance, which is located between Entrance Gates L and M, whereupon you will be escorted into the stadium and watch the game from in front of Blocks 20 and 21, sections reserved for home supporters. YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT YOU ARE NOT IN THE SAME STAND AS THE OTHER LIVERPOOL SUPPORTERS ATTENDING THIS FIXTURE.
- Turnstiles to the visitors sector will open at approximately 18.00 Hours (Local Time)
- Any articles contravening the ground regulations or deemed to be dangerous will be confiscated and retained by Security Officers and/or the police. For example:
Flag poles, flares, bottles, CIGARETTE LIGHTERS, umbrellas, air horns, knives, scissors, fireworks.
- Supporters taking flags and/or banners to the game will be asked to place them on the segregation fences to the sides of the sector and on any unused seats.
- Access will be denied to any supporter/s carrying alcohol or drugs or if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. FURTHERMORE IT IS AGAINST LOCAL LAWS TO DRINK ALCOHOL ON THE STREETS OF BUCHAREST. YOU COULD BE FINED THE SUM OF 116 EURO'S FOR DRINKING OUTSIDE OF LICENSED PREMISES.
- IT IS ALSO CONSIDERED IN BUCHAREST TO BE DISORDERLY CONDUCT IF YOU ARE HEARD TO BE LOUDLY SINGING OR SHOUTING IN THE STREETS OF THE CITY.
- The Visitors Sector will only offer basic refreshment facilities selling soft drinks, tea, coffee and simple snacks. SUPPORTERS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT TO PURCHASE ITEMS FROM THE SINGLE KIOSK IN THE VISITORS SECTOR YOU WILL FIRST HAVE TO PURCHASE CARDS / VOUCHERS FROM A SEPARATE OFFICE ADJACENT TO THE SALES POINT. THIS OFFICE WILL ONLY ACCEPT THE LOCAL CURRENCY THE ROMANIAN LEI.
- Basic and limited sanitary facilities (PORTALOO'S), both male and female can be found as you enter the stadium on the inside of the fencing which runs around the stadium before you climb the staircase to the seating area of the Visitors Sector. WE AGAIN WOULD ADVISE SUPPORTERS TO BE EXTREMELY VIGILANT WHEN USING THESE SANITARY FACILITIES AS THEY ARE LOCATED AT THE BASE OF A STEEP GRASS BANK AND THE LIGHTING IS ALSO VERY POOR.
A REQUEST WAS MADE TO THE HOST CLUB THAT THE LADIES PORTALOO SHOULD BE SUPERVISED TO ENSURE THAT IT IS ONLY USED BY FEMALES.
There is a designated mobile toilet within the stadium for use by disabled supporters attending the game. This will be located near to the Disabled Enclosure.
- A First Aid point will be provided near to the Visitors Sector.
- For safety reasons Liverpool supporters will be requested to remain in the stadium at the end of the match for a period of between fifteen (15) and thirty (30) minutes.
- Please look after your ticket as FC Steaua Bucuresti have advised that duplicates will not be issued.
We have also received the following advice from the British Embassy in Bucharest to pass on to all of our supporters travelling to Romania for the game:
1. You do not need a visa to enter Romania but your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.
2. Some bars and restaurants in Bucharest will try to take advantage of visiting tourists/supporters, therefore it is advised that you ALWAYS ASK TO SEE THE PRICE LIST BEFORE you order food and/or drinks.
3. It is recommended that whilst in Bucharest you always carry some form of photographic identification.
4. Ensure that you are suitably dressed as the visitors sector is open to the elements and night time temperatures in Romania could be very cold. Please check the weather forecast for Bucharest before leaving the UK.
5. Do not drink alcohol to excess because if it is evident to the Security Staff / Police at the stadium that you are under the influence you may be refused entry to the game.
6. Please take care when ascending and descending the staircase at the rear of the visitors sector as it is narrow and steep with poor lighting and no hand rails.
7. You should allow sufficient time to get to the stadium from the city centre as traffic in Bucharest is always heavy and a number of roads around the stadium will be closed on the day of the match. You will have to get to the stadium either by taxi, tram or bus.
8. When using a taxi in Bucharest you should only use vehicles that display a company name and agree / check the rate to be charged before travelling. Independent drivers, especially those located outside railway stations, the airports and hotels tend to be more expensive.
9. You should be aware of pickpockets and bag snatchers in crowded areas, particularly near exchange shops, hotels, on public transport and the main railway stations.
10. Be aware at all times of organized groups of thieves posing as plain clothes policemen inspecting your documents or distracting you while accomplices snatch watches or jewellery.
The currency in Romania is the LEI and there are approximately 4.9 Lei to one British Pound. Euro's can also be used in Romania although generally it is only hotels and some restaurants that will accept the Euro currency. It is therefore recommended that when travelling to Bucharest you take some Lei with you or change some pounds/Euro's upon arriving in the city.
Romania is two (2) hours ahead of the UK. Therefore if it is 6.00 pm in England it will be 8.00 pm in Bucharest.
