Linda, Linda, Linda Pizzuti...

Linda Pizzuti - Liverpool Kop’s new lucky mascot

American owner’s wife turns up at Anfield and inspires Stevie G to a hat-trick

When Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard came onto the field at halftime last night, with his team trailing 1-0 against Napoli, he didn't just have the club's new American owner, John W Henry, to impress. Henry's young wife, Linda Pizzuti, was also in the directors' box.
And her presence seems to have worked: Gerrard put on one of his all-too-rare Captain Fantastic displays and scored a show-stopping hat-trick, all three goals coming in a 14-minute burst. Result: Liverpool 3, Napoli 1.
It was Henry's first visit to a home game at Anfield since buying the club last month. His wife Linda Pizzuti's decision to fly over with him from the States - where he owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team - was clearly a stroke of genius.
When the game started, she had already endeared herself to the crowd by asking on Twitter what team songs she needed to learn - apart from You'll Never Walk Alone, of course, which Americans know because it was a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic (from Carousel) long before it was picked up by the Kop in the 1960s.
Not all the song suggestions tweeted back from Liverpool fans were helpful - Show Me the Way to Go Home and Hodgson out, Hodgson out, Hodgson Out were among them - but by this morning she was receiving welcome tweets galore, one fan even promising: "One day, the kop will create a special song for you and mr henry... thanks for coming..."
Linda, a real estate developer, was 30 to Henry's 59 when they married in June 2009. They exchanged vows on the Red Sox' legendary field at Fenway Park in front of 450 friends and family. The couple keep their main home - and yacht - in Baco Raton, Florida.
As one correspondent in the press box at Anfield commented last night, "She'd better be prepared to fly over for every match. The Kop needed a new lucky mascot after Liverpool's dreadful start to the season. They're not going to let her go now."
