Liverpool’s under-18 side thrashed Southed 9-0 at Anfield on Monday night to set up a quarter-final tie with either Newcastle or Manchester United.
Stephen Sama, Adam Morgan, Conor Coady (penalty) and Toni Silva were all also on target on the night, but it was Sterling, 16, who grabbed the headlines after yet another brilliant performance.
Wearing the number 7 shirt, Sterling scored his first-ever goal at the Kop end of Anfield early in the first half, before claiming his hat-trick in just 34 minutes.
Watched by Dalglish, assistant manager Sammy Lee and first team Steve Clarke, the teenager went on to score twice more in the second period, with his fourth possibly the best – cutting inside from the right wing to drift past a number of Southend defenders before drilling the ball into the left-hand corner.
Touted by Liverpool fans as the ‘next big thing’ at Anfield, Sterling joined Liverpool from QPR at the age of 15 for an initial fee of £600,000.
With Dalglish taking the time to watch the teenager play in a Youth Cup game, it may not be long until we see him make his senior debut in the Premier League.
